The Fort Hamer Bridge, currently under construction, will connect Upper Manatee Road with Fort Hamer Road across the Manatee River. It will mean easier access to Lakewood Ranch, a neighboring community located just south of The Islands. Lakewood Ranch offers world-class restaurants, unique shops, exciting entertainment, championship golf, and the famous Sarasota Polo Club. As one of the largest green-certified communities in America, Lakewood Ranch offers the finest “green” luxury lifestyle in the Sarasota/Tampa Bay region on Florida's Gulf Coast.
With the completion of the new bridge, residents of The Islands will have easier, faster access to Interstate 75, a direct route to Lakewood Ranch, as well as many other nearby areas. The new bridge, spanning 2,300 feet across the Manatee River, will have two lanes, paved bike lanes, a sidewalk on the east side, turn lanes at the north and south ends, improved shoulders, roadway lighting, and a traffic signal on the south side of the bridge at Upper Manatee River Road.
Construction on the Fort Hamer Bridge began in March 2015, and anticipated completion is scheduled for early 2017. When the bridge is completed, Lakewood Ranch residents and The Islands residents can enjoy more opportunities and experiences along the Manatee River. The new bridge will make travel from The Islands to Sarasota and nearby communities like Lakewood Ranch just a short drive away. It will bring added conveniences, as well as exciting business and lifestyle opportunities, to this luxurious area along the beautiful Florida Suncoast.
