Among one of many cities listed on various retirement sites on Florida's west coast is Sarasota. It's ranked No. 2 by TopRetirements.com and is a top pick of Kiplinger.com. Kiplinger raves about its tax-friendly environment, affordable cost of living, and beautiful beaches. For those looking for access to a bigger city nearby, Sarasota is a short drive from Tampa/St. Petersburg.

What makes Sarasota one of the greatest cities to retire in are the low costs of living, especially when it comes to health care, the high volume

of golf courses and parks, and the large segment of people age 60 and older.

Those lucky enough to find themselves living in Sarasota can choose from outdoor activities like fishing, sailing, swimming, kayaking, sarasota_night.jpgbiking, golfing and running throughout the year.  There are several parks in downtown Sarasota, not to mention the massive Myakka River State Park. And then, of course, there are the beaches. Siesta Beach has earned acclaim for its beautiful white sand and clear water. Lido Beach, just south of St. Armands Circle, is another wide stretch of shoreline that's easy to access. If those get crowded , beachgoers opt for Longboat Beach, Venice Beach, Bradenton Beach or the beaches of Anna Maria Island, all of which are a short drive from Sarasota. Cultural amenities like museums and art galleries and a collection of unique restaurants help provide perfect date nights. The annual Sarasota Film Festival and Sarasota Farmers Market draw visitors to the downtown area.

Florida is one of the most tax-friendly states in the country for retirees. There’s no state income tax, estate tax or inheritance tax. Permanent residents are entitled to a homestead exemption of up to $50,000. Seniors may qualify for an additional exemption.
