One of the many benefits of living in Florida is the proximity to untouched nature. For those who enjoy walks and wildlife spotting, life at The Islands on the Manatee River is a perfect choice. Not only is this gated golf and boating community located on the Manatee River, but the newly opened Fort Hamer Bridge means that Lakewood Ranch is now just minutes away.

Relaxing Hours on a Nature Trail
Lakewood Ranch includes 3,500 acres of nature preserves, parks and lakes, and 150 miles of trails. The trails take you across a range of environments so you can experience the many animal species that Florida has to offer, including alligators, deer, and herons, as well as a variety of other wetland birds and hosts of different fish species.
Visit to Herons Nest Nature Preserve
One of the best places to see the variety of wildlife that the area offers is Herons Nest Nature Preserve. This wildlife sanctuary is home to many trails and a host of birds that live and fish off of the two lakes, Heron and Summerfield. The park itself is set on 110 acres, with soft mulch trails throughout the area and over wooden bridges that cross the lakes. There are stations at different points along the different routes that explain the different habitats you’re encountering as you enjoy your walk. If walking isn’t for you, boating and fishing are both encouraged within the park.
Find Your New Fishing Spot
If you are feeling very adventurous, or want to go back to try another walk, there is the Braden River Nature trail. This trail is part of Riverwalk and connects to the Herons Nest trails. From this walk, you can experience Trophy Lake, which takes up 15 acres and provides a habitat for bass, along with other Florida fish species. If you’re looking for a fishing opportunity, but aren’t ready to test your skills on Trophy Lake, you can take a more relaxed approach at Otter Lake.
Enjoy the Experience
In addition to the mesmerizing scenery and animal species to enjoy, the area around Lakewood Ranch provides the perfect opportunity to stop and relax, share a picnic, or sit back and watch the day go by. Just remember to watch out for unexpected waterside visitors, and never feed the animals, particularly the alligators. While they are fun to watch, a little distance from the wildlife is always a good thing.
